The 2013 IMIAD Workshop was managed and organized by Dr. Özge Cordan-ITU IMIAD Program Coordinator in the name of Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, Department of Interior Architecture, with participation of 55 students and 21 tutors between the dates of 1-14 September 2013 at ITU Taskisla Campus in Istanbul, Turkey.
This Year’s theme of the workshop has been identified as “shopping Culture and Spaces of Exchange”. As it was in the first IMIAD workshop, held by ITU in 2007, Istanbul - a magnificent city to think , understand, explore and evaluate this phenomenon with macro and micro-scales was again the place and subject of the workshop in 2013. In two weeks time span, shopping culture and spaces of exchange has been investigated in the context of Istanbul through past, present and future connections. In addition, spaces that throughout history have assumed an important role in the spread and development of the city’s various shopping cultures-were questioned at different levels such as user-action-space relations. This, in line, was aimed to pave way for the proposal of sensitivities and approaches towards new and creative interiors unique to their place and their time. The Challenge was to create new layer(s) in the ever evolving and ever and ever shifting shopping places, activities and the shopping culture of city, whilst at the same time keeping the genius loci of the place.
Besides the main theme of the workshop and its inquires, the workshop was also aimed to create and juries were done, seminars were given and excursions were organized to contemporary and historical architectural places of commercial activities, as well as the various localities of the project sites - which also served as in-depth case studies. This book includes all activities, seminars, students presentations, the development of projects, site visits excursions, reflections from the tutors, information on participants including the introductory brief and the evaluation of the workshop itself.
